Do you really want a dog for a pet? In this part of Kentucky dogs require routine checkups and medication for diseases like heartworm and rabies. A pet dog can be a loving family member, but like all family members they require some extra attention sometimes. Does a dog really want you for an owner? Dogs are social animals (That's why they're such good pets!), and that means that they need an owner who will spend time with them. Some dogs need play play time, others just need your company, but they all need more than just food and water. Why choose a dog at the shelter? Many of the dogs at the shelter had previous owners who simply neglected them or couldn't take care of them, and so they were either dropped off or released into the county. Adopting a shelter animal not only gives that dog a new home, but can help break the cycle of homeless puppies that adds to the problem of stray dogs in the county. Finally, shelter adoption is a bargain. The adoption fee for dogs from the shelter is $61.50, which includes:
Homeless animals may be held at the shelter for up to five days, so frequent visits will provide lots of opportunity to find the kind of pet you are looking for. If you are claiming a pet, the cost is $20.00 to pick the animal up plus $10.00 for each day after. The shelter is north of Middlesboro on Hwy 25E, on the Page Cutoff Road. Although it is open between 8:00 am and 4:00 PM on weekdays, we encourage visitors to call ahead (at 606 337-6331) since business sometimes takes the wardens away from the shelter. We also encourage visits at times other then 12:00 - 2:00 PM on Tuesday and Thursday, when shelter staff have appointments for other shelter business.
