Hot Off the Press:
What’s new at the shelter

Another successful spay/neuter clinic was held at the Lincoln Memorial Vet Tech facility in February. As part of Spay Day USA events, FOS helped LMU’s Vet Tech school work with families and their pets who might otherwise not be able to afford the surgery. FOS members and LMU students were on hand to help in the day’s events.

In all, 33 pets were spayed or neutered, 23 from Bell County and 10 from Claiborne. Dr. Jared Graves and Union County, Tennessee, and Dr. Beth Burchett from LMU were the veterinarians volunteering their time for this very important cause. Another spay/neuter clinic is scheduled for April 9th.

FOS received a donation of just over $400 from the SpayDay USA photo contest in which people paid $1 to vote for their favorite pet photo. Pictured on page 2 is Annie, companion of Charlotte Newland of Ewing, VA, who received the most votes of the pets entered locally. Be sure to get some good photos this year of your pets and enter them in the 2011 SpayDay Photo Contest.

In other shelter news: The Bell County Animal Shelter staff is doing a terrific job of getting animals out of the shelter and into homes and rescue groups. So far this year almost 100 animals have gone to various rescue groups, including the Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley, the English Setter Rescue in Ohio, the Great Pyrenees Rescue in Frankfort, the HS of East Tennessee, and a shelter in Queensbury, New York.

Another great way the shelter facilitates adoptions is by teaming up with Petfinder.com to share our adoptable pets with the country. Periodically we get feedback on how many people look at our pets—in just one week in late March 2010, our 2 cats and 18 dogs accumulated 875 hits!

The shelter needs cat litter, newspapers, chew bones and toys, and puppy chow
